The New Multiverse Theory? Brian Greene, Vibrating Strings, and 10⁵⁰⁰ Universes

I just watched Alex O’Connor interview physicist Brian Greene — 25 years after “The Elegant Universe” — about string theory and where the multiverse actually comes from. Here’s the science, told plainly, and then what it looks like through the Holofractal lens.

The Science, Plainly

Physics stands on two pillars. Quantum mechanics describes the smallest things in the world. General relativity describes the biggest. Each works beautifully in its own domain — but put their math together and every calculation returns the same answer: infinity. As Greene puts it, infinity is the mathematics grabbing us by the lapels and saying you are doing something wrong.

String theory’s fix is one tiny move: what if the fundamental particles aren’t dots, but tiny vibrating filaments? Make that move and the two theories melt together. The electron is a vibrating string. The quarks are vibrating strings. And the different vibrational patterns — like different notes on a musical string — are the different particles that make up the world. The universe becomes, in Greene’s words, a microscopic cosmic symphony.

But the math has a requirement: extra dimensions of space — crumpled up so small we can’t see them. In the 1980s there were five possible shapes those hidden dimensions could take. Then ten. Then a million. Then 10⁵⁰⁰. And Leonard Susskind, working from inflationary cosmology — where our Big Bang was not a one-time event — proposed the natural conclusion: maybe all of those shapes are real. Many big bangs. Many universes. Each with its own shape for the extra dimensions, its own physics. That is the new multiverse theory.

The catch? To test it directly you’d need a particle collider the size of the galaxy. Which is why Greene spends the last part of the conversation defending string theory as science at all — testable in principle, just not yet. Maybe not for a century. Maybe there’s an undiscovered equation that picks out one single shape and deletes the other 10⁵⁰⁰ − 1. Nobody knows.

Through the Holofractal Lens

Now look at the Map of Dimensions.

The ground floor of the Map is a single point that cannot move — it can only vibrate. And everything, every particle, every force, every world, is a harmonic of that one vibration. When Greene says the different vibrational patterns of a string are the different particles, that is the first dimension of the Map speaking with a Columbia physics professor’s voice.

And the multiverse? On the Map, the eighth dimension is all possible universes — zero-point vibrational variations. Same point, same vibration — different harmonics, different worlds. String theory’s version: many big bangs, each crystallizing a different shape for the hidden dimensions, each shape ringing out different physics. Ten-to-the-500 shapes. All possible configurations, held in a continuum. The vocabulary is different. The picture is the same.

Even the open question matches. Greene says maybe all the shapes exist — or maybe one equation picks a single shape and the rest were never real. That is the oldest question on the Map: the difference between what could exist and what does. If this exists, then this exists.

Scientists have leapfrogged their own instruments by a hundred years, and the honest ones say so out loud. That’s the fog I keep writing into this site. The Map of Dimensions is just my best organized thought for walking through it.
